Double check that your device's external volume control is set to sound on. This can be external speakers, or even the external toggle that turns the sound off on a tablet or smartphone.
If you're using a newer iPad, make sure that you don't have Silent Mode enabled. This mode can be toggled from the control center (look for the red bell icon).
